Given the great success of the first European Startup Monitor, the German Startups Association (GSA) and the European Startup Network (ESN) introduced the second European Startup Monitor (ESM) on the 22nd of November 2016. As with the previous ESM, the data for the study was generated by national startup associations and network partners, using their well established networks to circulate the online survey within the national startup ecosystem to create meaningful findings. The 2nd ESM was able to increase its number of network partners and its data base.
In the ESM 2016, more than 2,500 startups were surveyed representing more than 6,300 founders and over 23,000 employees. The comparable data on the various European startup ecosystems was analysed in cooperation with startup-representatives of 17 different European Countries and Israel.
In addition, several international academic partners have supported the project and use the data for their research in a national context, among them are the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Austria), the Antwerp management school from the University of Antwerp (Belgium), the University of Cyprus (Cyprus), the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany), the Corvinus Universit of Bundapest (Hungary), the NOVA University of Lisbon (Portugal), the University of Maribor (Slovenia), University of Alcalá (Spain), and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland).
The data collection for the third ESM will start in summer 2017. All national startup representatives from Europe are encouraged to contact the ESN for possible partnerships.
